John Banville channels Henry James brilliantly!
I did not detect any tell-tale lapses in language, situations, characterizations or syntax. Instead, Mrs Osmond has the feel of a continuation of James's Portrait of a Lady, with the same characters and background, dispelling some of the mysteries left hanging in James's novel and adding some pleasant and convincing new plot elements.
Delightful!
