This is an all time classic book. It tells about the adventures of a young woman who had to move north for health reasons then fell in love with a Mountie. Wonderful true story, wholesome. Even my teenage boys loved it!

I suggested this for book club for a few reasons: first, I had never heard of the book and was stunned to see how many people had read it. Second, I saw it compared to "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" -- which is a superb book.
"Mrs. Mike" is a lovely story about a real woman. As we all agreed in book club, you do get lost in her story. It's amazing. But, the writing is adequate at best.
So, don't expect to be wowed by amazing prose. But do expect to be blown away by the story of one of the bravest young women ever.

I first read this book when I was 12 years old, and have been in love with Mike Flannigan ever since. I dig this out and read it about twice or three times a year. It is the best book I've ever read, and I have read a lot of books. I was very happy when I found out that there was a sequel written, called "The Search for Joyfull". Read this book, especially if you like books about the frontier, or the far north. You will not be disappointed.

I read this as a teenager. It is a touching story of a young woman leaving family behind to start a new life with her husband in the far north. Not only is there a little adventure and a little romance, it is filled with wonderful insight into the people and way of llife of the region. And, of course, there is a moral to the story about priorities and love.
I recommend it to all the teenage girls I know. Just haven't gotten one to read it yet.

Interesting and unusual romance about a girl from Boston (literally, as she starts the book at age 15) who moves to the Canadian wilderness to live with her uncle and finds love with Sgt Mike Flannigan of the Canadian Mounted Police. Not a typical romance but more of a woman's journey into adulthood and into life. Learning that the little things are what make a marriage and that a good, honest life can be as beautiful as the wilderness around you.

A sweet, romantic, sometimes heartbreaking story that will stay with me.
I really enjoyed this book, it is about a newly married couple in Calgary Alberta Canada-and how they survive in this vast wilderness.Her husband is a Canadian Mounted Policeman. Its very very good.

For a long time this book has haunted the back of my mind and until now I did not pick it up. I'm so glad that I did. It's the story of Katherine Mary O'Fallon. I simply must share one statement from the back of the edition I read: "Three people are responsible for Mrs. Mike - Nancy and Benedict Freedman - who wrote it, and Katherine Mary Flanagan, who lived it."
Kathy was a young, idealist teenager when she moved to Canada hoping the move would improve her health. What she found was good health, love and a demanding and beautiful environment. Her experiences were often tragic but were laced with warm memories and blessings. Kathy endured wildfires, disease and war becoming all the stronger for it.
The loss of her beloved children put her into a depressive spin that halted only during a visit home to Boston where she discovered that her heart was with the tall man she married and the kind people who were her Canadian life. It was the little things that mattered rather than the materialistic lives her Boston family and friends lived. Yes, this is an enchanting read but it made me cry when as I read about so many deaths. The pattern that Kathy discovered came with the people she met and lost and those she discovered and cherished. Wonderful, wonderful read.

This is a very sweet, lived happily ever after love story set in Northwest Canada in the early 1900s. The hardship of life at that time and place is fairly well described. I found the immaturity of Katherine Mary frustrating and wonder if, in reality, she would have made the decision she did at the end of the book. Perhaps I'm looking at it from the jaded view of a much older adult. This is the type of story one normally finds on the Hallmark Channel.
This was a lovely story, set in the Canadian wilderness, of a young Mountie and his Boston bride. The writing is very descriptive without being overly wordy, and it is easy to picture the snowy beauty of the Canadian countryside. Although it is not religious fiction, it is a very "clean" book, without excess sex or violence, for those who prefer that sort of story. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading this tale of life's joys and times of survival. Absolutely amazing what this young woman goes through. Reflects the hardships of the setting in the rugged Canadian wilderness during that time period. The main characters are well-developed and believable. I highly recommend this novel.
This is a favorite of mine from my childhood and is now a favorite of my daughter's, as well. It is based on the true story of a Boston girl who moves to the Canadian North with her new husband, a Canadian Mountie, to share his rugged life in a remote village there. They experience both joys and hardships together. This is a very compassionate look at hard times and the strength of character that Kathy develops through love and loss. A compelling story full of meaning and richness. Warning: there are some vivid scenes of tragedy that might not be appropriate for an elementary-aged child.
OMG - I read this book while in middle school and loved it. For me to remember the title and details so many years later speaks significantly to this books' story. A wonderful read for any age! Highly recommend.

I love this book. It is however, very sad, and I can't reread it without starting to cry by the third chapter. This does not keep me from doing so. An excellent book about life in the arctic circle before WWI.
I read this book in fifth grade - the first "long" book that I'd ever read. I remember the story to this day...a great adventure about a courageous woman.
