A very satisfying series of modern British who-dunnits. Well written and the two main characters are appealing. Lighter fare than P.D. James or Elizabeth George, but quite satisfying nevertheless.

Another great book by Crombie. In this one, Superintendent kincaid is called in to investigate the murder of a powerful policeman who's history of arrogance and cruelty was legendary. Good read.

I am really liking this series; great mysteries that are not filled with frivolous material. Really like the relationship Duncan and Gemma have; this book was my favorite so far. I wish it hadn't taken me this long to find this series but I sure am glad I did.

#4 in the Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James Scotland Yard police procedural series. A commander in the police force who lives in a remote village is found with his head bashed in in his kitchen. Was the motive personal, professional, or purely a random act of violence brought about as part of an attempted burglary? Duncan and Gemma, both feeling decidedly awkward after their tumble in the sack at the end of the last book, set out to find the answers, and find much more than they'd bargained for. I really enjoy this series and marvel that I just discovered it last year. I did guess accurately at 'whodunit' very early in the game and even got the 'whydunit' right, but of course had no proof til closer to the end. But it really didn't spoil the book for me at all and I don't think the next in series will be on my TBR stacks for too long! Seems to get better with each book in the series.

Fourth in the series. A high-ranking police officer has been murdered in his own house. Scotland Yard's Deputy Inspector Kincaid is called to take on the case, and he calls up his assistant Gemma James. There's a lot of tension between them after the hookup in the last book - James is reconsidering due to the potential impact on her career while Kincaid wants a real relationship. The murdered man and his wife also seem to have had some issues, although it takes a while for the pair to ferret them out. I guessed the killer instantly. I am never sure these days if that's because I have read the book before - although I didn't remember it at all - or just because I've read a lot of mysteries. Okay for someone new to start here.
