A really good and different book on the mountain men. It is devoted to relating the economics of the fur trade as well as what really happened and how they laid the ground for the settlement of the west. it consists of biographies by different authors ( mostly academics) of the various characters. Very few of the dime novel stories are related. Most of the big ones do not even rate a sentence. Instead it goes to what drove the people involved and how they related to each other and to civilization.
