I liked this detective. He's definitely real, as in he gets his butt beat a couple of times. However, he's not totally helpless as in he can get in some good punches and kicks and carries a gun. In this first story of the series, he is trying to find a mobsters adopted daughter who is AWOL from college.
Marla Bernstein is a pretty teenager who is the ward of Ben Morningstar, a semi-retired mobster who prefers to keep family business out of the newspapers. When Marla disappears, the gang boss is forced to call in private eye Amos Walker. I will read the next one.
