"A wonderful book. Well-researched fur trade setting, cultures in interaction and conflict. The characters are believable and complex individuals...a great love story ... a special understanding of American Indian mysticism." Don Coldsmith

During the winter of 1825, Richard Hamilton---a timid Harvard philosphy student--arrives in St. Louis on business for his father. Robbed and beaten, desperate to save his life, he reluctantly joins the crew of the MARIA, a fur trader's keelboat. Bound for the beautiful, wild, and dangerous Indian country of the Upper Yellowstone River, the native Bostonian begins the education and adventure of a Lifetime.

Amazing reverse trip up the river system instead of down. I sort of follow the natural history and anthropology bits and give these sorts of plots a miss. I wasn't sorry i read it though, all in all not a bad read.

My friend was reading this and I found the subject interesting enough to try it. Although the main character was not at first my favorite, he grew on me and I became invested in seeing it through.
The history relayed here seems more accurate than some historical novels I've read of the same period.
Overall, I liked it enough to go on and read the sequel.
