A sequel to one of my favorite books, Summer of My German Soldier. It's quite good even though I enjoyed the first book more.
The sequel to The Summer of My German Soldier. I read this a long time ago after I had to read the Summer of My German Soldier over a summer for high school. I'm sure I recall it being a decent book. Here is the summary from the back of the book:
Graduating from Jerkinsville High School marks a new beginning for Patty Bergen. Its been a long time since shes been called a "jew Nazi lover", but before she can face her future, she must come to terms with her past. For although Anto, the escaped German POW whom Patty sheltered when she was twelve, has been dead for six years, her feelings for him will not die.
Driven by a need to find the love her parents denied her, Patty decides to go to Germany in search of Anton's mother, desperate for a connection to the man she loved and lost. En rout to her destination, she stops in Paris, where she meets Roger. The encounter makes Patty think twice about her plan --not only because of what she might find, but because of what she might leave behind...
Six years later. After being sent to reform school for hiding a German prisoners during the war she finds home life is no better. Her mother still finds fault with her appearance and actions. Traveling to Europe, Patty marvels at ocean waves, makes friends on the ship and travels to Paris with the help of a shipboard friend. She enrolls in a French language school and meets Roger, a photographer, who falls in love with her. He is as different from her father as he can be - kind, loving, gentle and considerate. He is as poor as she is. She collapses, lands in the hospital and discovers she has a peptic ulcer. Roger is there for her then, too. However, she realizes that she has not fulfilled her wish to put closure on her friendship with Anton. In her heart she thinks that Anton's mother may be the mother she wished she had had and and they can share their grief. Roger is upset, they fight and she leaves for Germany. What she discovers in Germany is far from what she dreamed she would find. In addition, she discovers more about herself. This YA read is a good sequel to The Summer of My German Soldier.
This book is the sequel to Bette Greene's book "The Summer Of My Geman Soldier", based on true events.
