The story of Moreta takes us deep into the Weyrs and the lives of the Weyrfolk hundreds of years before Lessa and F'lar rule Benden. Aside from the fantasy aspect, this story is also a medical drama, following certain characters who are racing to diagnose and cure a plague.
I really liked this book, and I love the two Weyrwomen who it focuses on (and their Queens, of course). It is an excellent read, and can really be picked up at any point in the series, even as a first look into the world of Pern.

This is the story of a key personage in Pern's history, Moreta. Moreta is the leading Weyrwoman of Pern and finds the job not an easy one. Not only does she have to deal with the threat of Thread, but also a plague that could destroy life on Pern. This is one of the best Pern stories and will really tug at your heart strings. If you're a Pern fan, you HAVE to read this one.

This is my favorite of all the Pern books because it is the only McCaffrey book (aside from those she co-wrote with her son) which actually shows weyr life during Threadfall. Although Moreta's Ride is a song which had been mentioned some in other Pern books, there hadn't been any detail provided about this heroine.
Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern gives a fascinating insight into how the various levels of McCaffrey's society operated: Weyr, Craft, Hall and Hold in addition to the many "little people" whose lives and destinies were shaped by the decisions of the former. Personalities, politics, traditions and custom weave in and out seamlessly in this book.
In many ways I see this book as being set in the "golden years" of Pern life during Threadfall, and I think it is McCaffrey's best book of all. She is a master at bringing emotions to the forefront. While I have sniffled and held back tears in some of other McCaffrey's books, this one in particular also made me laugh out loud sometimes.
Although this book is more likely to be picked up and read by Pern fans, I think it could also serve as a good introduction to McCaffrey's dragon world books. Some of her earlier books, which chronologically come ahead of this one in her series, can come across as stilted and pretentious (especially the first one). But by the time McCaffrrey got around to bringing us Moreta she had settled into an intimate understanding of this amazing world she has created.

A good read, but the ending was enough different from her normal (and not handled quite as deftly as I would have expected)that I was a touch disappointed.

Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders" series must surely rate among the best in science fictiondom. "Moreta" is surely the best in the series.

This is a discarded library book. It is in good condition but the first
blank page has a rip in it. It has the plastic wrapping that all library books have around the jacket. It also been stamped: Tunkhannock public
library on the first and last page.

This is an older book, pages are yellowing just a bit, and there is a bit of staining, maybe from coffee on page edges, but book is in good readable condition.
Thanks,
