I picked this up because the 3rd episode of the HBO series had a story that I was not familiar with. Sure enough, I found it in this 3rd volume of the series. I did not realize that they were jumping back and forth between books for their stories! But in this volume Mma Ramotswe has decided to move her detective agency into the same building as her fiance's Speedy Motors garage. When he falls into a clinical depression, she finds herself having to deal with both businesses, and promotes her secretary Mma Makutsi to assistant manager of the garage. She proves herself astonishingly capable as the garage flourishes and she turns the two lazy apprentices into hardworking mechanics. Meanwhile Mma Ramotswe has to spend a week in a farm investigating an important government official's family to find out who among them could be a murderer. While she is gone Mma Makutsi handles her first case on her own, investigating the finalists in a beauty contest to find out if they are morally worthy of the grand prize. It's another laid-back cozy mystery in this well-done series set in Botswana, Africa.

A quick and easy read, seemingly simple prose but sometimes pretty deep insights into humanity and relationships. Great series (part of "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" books by McCall Smith)!

In this 3rd book of the series No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Precious Ramotswe and her assistant solve mysteries brought to them by an important Government Man, and a beauty queen event organizer. In addition, after moving her business into the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors owned by her fiance, she discovers that Mr.J.L.B. Matekoni has some personal problems that are affecting his business. Again, these lighthearted mysteries are a joy to read and I look forward to No. 4.

As always, I enjoyed reading about the delightful characters in this series. I can escape to a simpler place and a different culture. Love the "old Botswana" ways and the way they think and talk. They are so real. I recommend these books, not for the mystery, but for the sheer delight of being with these people in that place. Alexander McCall Smith is amazing as he writes about different types of people and cultures with such wisdom and understanding
love this series!

The #1 Ladies Detective Agency is set in Botswana, where Mma Ramotswe has opened the first woman owned detective agency. It is knowing human nature that allows Mma Ramotswe to solve her cases. This is a down to earth book, that allows you to think you could actually do the same thing she is doing. Very believable characters. I have enjoyed each of the books in the seies so far.

Another delightful outing from Mma Ramotswe and her No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. This is the 3rd book in the series and it was just as enjoyable as the first two. These books are very laid back and are like a slice of life from Botswana. In this one, Mma Ramotswe investigates the alleged poisoning of the brother of an important "Government Man" and Mma Makutsi, assistant detective is also promoted to assistant manager of the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, when Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, the owner and Mma Ramotswe's fiance, is apparently struck with depression. While Mma Ramotswe is working on the case for the Government man, Makutsi is tasked with looking into the moral character of the four finalists of the Miss Beauty and Integrity Contest, who may end up being Miss Botswana. She also takes charge of the apprentices at Speedy Motors and is actually able to make them productive! Very enjoyable and highly recommended!

really like this series, but im starting to have some.. issues. first off- i want to say that i really like his descriptions of africa and the people of botswana. i havent read anything on the country, so i like the insight it gives.
my issues:
the book is titled morality for beautiful girls and the description on the back cover is about a case involving beauty contest contestants. unfortunately, that case doesnt come up until page 154! that's kind of annoying.
i think that some parts are getting to be too repetitive. i feel like in every other chapter Mma Ramotswe is described as having a "traditional build" and we are reminded of Mma Makutsi's score of 97 percent on her secretarial exam. i feel like saying "ok! we get the point! enough already!"
i'm digging the characters and the series, but i had another issue with Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni all of a sudden having a bout of depression. I felt like he was this perfect guy in the first 2 books and then BAM! he's depressed and kind of disappears. It came out of nowhere.
i also feel like my brain is turning to mush. i think that maybe tackling all of the books at once was a bit much. im thinking starting monday i might take a break. i like the simplicity of the series, but im starting to want more.
