"SHE'S ONE THING BY DAY, SOMETHING ELSE ALTOGETHER BY NIGHT... After escaping the slaughter of her clan at a young age, Scottish noblewoman Sabrina Verrick provides for her siblings by living a double life, until the night she encounters the Duke, and her secret and all she holds dear is threatened...
HE'S SO DISILLUSIONED, HE'S COMPLETELY VULNERABLE... With his inheritance at stake, Lucien, Duke of Camareigh, sets a trap for the Scottish beauty with the piercing violet eyes, never imagining what will happen when the trap is sprung..."

This was a book about two very strong-willed and independent protagonists. I liked the battle of wills that existed between them. They were colorful, interesting characters that drew me in. Their love story was a true battle though. Things did not come easily between them because they were both driven by pride. Lucien had a very hard edge to him that made me want to hit him over the head to make him bend a little and show more emotion to Sabrina, but he was a duke and thus tended to be very arrogant and expected everything to go his way and without any resistance to his will. He eventually had some growth and softening that took place with him, but it took, of course, a great crisis, to bring the two together, finally. I very much thought it was worth the read and would recommend it.

I also liked the secondary characters. Sabrina and her siblings were very close and devoted to one another. Their personalities helped to flesh the story out and bring a balance to her antics and bold nature. Her sidekicks in crime were likeable as well. The whole community that was created gave a good and more complete picture of Sabrina's loyalty and steadfastness that could not always be seen with her escapades as a highwayman.

This is one of my keepers. I have had this original copy over 25 years! That should give you an idea how good this book is. Every several years I would reread it. I believe McBain was writing at her best with the books she wrote during this time in her career.
