Classic story of Charles Strickland, a London stockbroker who suddenly abandons his wife and family to become a painter. Maugham at his best!

We read this book in my book club - the first two chapters are a bit tedious but overall this was a compelling read.

Beautiful novel about the inner possessions of an artist and all outer possessions are dismissed. Charles Strickland has the drive to paint and become better. He doesn't paint to make money or for the fame. Its the possession deep inside of him that drives him to paint and leave everything else behind. Maugham digs to find this possession.
