It's hard to know how to describe this fantastic delight! One reviewer says it's what would happen if "Harry Potter grew up and joined the fuzz." Peter Grant is a police officer who discovers he can use magic in the first book in the series, Midnight Riot. Peter has been apprenticed to the last remaining police wizard, Thomas NIghtingale, and the cases they deal with are grotesque and funny. Not recommended for the faint of heart, but if you don't mind a little blood in your mysteries, this is a great one.
