This book is one of the best books that I have ever read. It was full of action and hard to put down. The scary thing is that something like this could possibly happen in our lifetime.

Monument 14 follows a boy named Dean. A high school kid who does not hang with the popular crowd. While heading to school one morning their town is hit with a massive hail storm. Not all make it out but with the help of a quick thinking bus driver she gets 14 kids to safety in a Greenway Store. She leaves to get help but never returns.

With all communications failed they have no choose but to wait until help arrives. Then every thing goes catastrophic. A nuclear disaster and even the air you breathe can make you violent or even cause death. The 14 have no choice but to stick together or die alone.

I really liked the characters in this book. Each character was wonderfully developed. The writing style was fast paced, just like I like it, that leaves you craving more. The only disappointment is I have to wait until next summer for the second book to come out. I need more now!

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a frightening scenario with a realistic chain of events caused by Mother Nature. There were some likeable characters, especially among the young children. But they were kids looking after each other and making crucial survival decisions and I had trouble accepting that they were able to protect themselves so effectively from the chemical exposure even though they experienced some consequences from it. It takes place over a period of 12 days mostly cut off from the outside world with little news of events. It doesn't quite tie up all the loose ends, but wraps up with a sense of hope.
