This is another unusual story; Sarah Kinkaide had a son, Danny, without the benefit of marriage. She was a naive schoolmarm and seduced by Ethan Pembrooke. Are you sitting down? Ethan seduced Sarah to get a child for his wife, Priscilla. When Sarah ran away with her newborn, Ethan sent bounty hunter Zach Garrett after her.

Zach is another interesting character because he was an orphan from New York City who was sent on the orphan trains to the Mid-West (Illinois) for a new life. Zach's life was probably fairly typical, he became an indentured servant. Zach grew up always working towards his goal -- independence and a small piece of land to own.

Perhaps surprisingly, all of this works (even to my jaded senses).
