Karen Gravano grew up pampered and spoiled with everything she ever wanted. What she didn't realize that her privileges came as a result of her father's criminal activities. The rule was that wives and children were not to be involved. Even to ask what her father did was unacceptable. In this book she reveals her feelings and reactions to what happened.
Karen's life came apart when the FBI arrested her father, John Gotti, and other high ranking officials in the gang world. Her father was underboss to Gotti but when all of them were arrested it became obvious that Gotti intended to blame Karen's father, Sammy, for most of what happened. He was to be portrayed as an out of control killer. In addition, it appeared that Gotti was setting him up for a hit. At that point Sammy thought long and hard about his defense finally deciding to "rat" on those who were ready to set him up. He was the highest ranking criminal to ever do so.
Life did not get easier. It became more difficult as those who were once friends distanced themselves from the Gravano family. Karen and her brother found themselves with fewer friends.
All went according to Sammy's plan. Many were indicted but he received five years plus probation. Living in Arizona and Colorado, the family began to live an honest life. However, being a Gravano changed what happened. Sammy in his attempt to keep his son out of "the life" lent money to him and a friend. Sammy did not know that the friend was a kingpin in a drug operation. Sammy's reputation made him a target and the family lost everything. Karen gives the details from her point of view and what happens as a result. This is a most interesting and easy read.
