A famous actress drops her career to go and live at "Alderley" with her married-in-name-only lover (sure!). So besotted with him and thrilled with her "real home" is she that quite a lot (as in almost everything) escapes her notice. A rising opera star/nymphomaniac daughter, a luxurious suite in a run-down flop-house hotel, a young drifter with an erie resemblance to the lover, a surprising bond with the lover's "wife" ...These are the stuff of which Barnard creates a fascinating novel. Great read!
