I read book one, Spirited Away, more than a year before finally getting this one, book 2, from PBS. I had forgotten most of the first book's plot.
You don't *really* need book 1 to enjoy book 2, but I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had remembered the plot better.
I love the way the Japanese write horror, however I feel like the translation was very stilted and tried too hard to be "accurate" rather than help the flow of the novel. If you liked the first one, do continue reading! The book gets better, or I got used to the translation, and I ended up enjoying the story.
I don't think I'll continue reading the series - there's 13 total, because I have a lot of other things to read that I think I'll get from PBS or the library faster.
