A very pleasant surprise. I had never read anything by Mari Sandoz before, and this was a very good place to start. An absorbing tale of a female doctor in Northern Nebraska on the gold trail to Deadwood and the Black Hills. Now before you go Oh, yeah , there were actually at least three out there. This is a novel, but it skillfully blends fact and fiction. There is a real flavor of the frontier, and it is not sugar coated. I love this area of South Dakota and Nebraska. For a slightly more modern tale of the same area read Dalva by Jim Harrison. He used Miss Morissa as part of his research for Dalva.
