About a vicar's daughter who marries an Earl out of poverty. He promises he won't touch her, for he maried her because he owed her father a dept. It escalates from there and you can guess what happen's in the end. All in all, a good book.
Though Miss Cassandra Drayton was a sheltered vicar's daughter, she knew enough of the world to have no illusions about Phineas Ravenville, the Earl of Mansfield. Handsome he might be, but he was arrogant, cynical, cold-hearted, and licentious as well. Cassandra had even fewer illusions about his marriage proposal that she was in no position to refuse. He was simply settling a debt of honor even he could not ignore.

Miss Cassandra Drayton had fallen in love with a second son, and had allowed her passion to take her beyond what was proper. She did not overly worry though, because, her beloved had gone to see his brother, the Earl of Mansfield, to announce that he was going to marry Cassandra. After a prolonged absence, Cassandra began to despair, but when she was informed that a gentleman was waiting to see her she was ecstatic. That is until she entered the room to find the Earl instead of his brother. The Earl was there to make good on a promise he had made to his brother, as he lay dying from wounds obtained in a carriage accident. The Earl offered her marriage (as a matter of honor, not for love) and Cassandra had no choice to accept as she was carrying the Earl's brother's child. Phineas Ravenville, is one of the Seven Corinthians, and several of the other Corinthians make appearances throughout the book. Mostly notable, the Marquess of Gresham, who helps Phineas to realize he might not be as indifferent to his wife as he had thought...

I believe I'm getting tired of the alpha male role who has no view point but black and white. Found the premise far fetched that the heroine could fall in love with this hero, when the man she loved and was pregnant by died, was of a giving and warm nature. Found myself enjoying the hero's friend and the heroine's sister more.
