Great book, and so true to life. My first experience of hospital birth was so much like Naomi Wolf's it was eerie -- cold, harsh nurses and impatient doctors -- I hired a birth assistant for my second child. That made all the difference. It's so important to have a nurturing person who is familiar with the birth experience with you. Husbands can't be expected to do it all -- they are as inexperienced and in some ways as needing of support as the birthing woman.

This is a must read for any mom-to-be. This will revolutionize your ideas about giving birth. Wolf exposes the hospital birth for the profiteering, drug pushing institution that it is. For them, time is money & their motive is to get your baby out as fast as possible and send you both home. Wolf examines alternative birthing options such as the home birth under the care of midwife. I strongly suggest watching the movie: "The Business of Being Born" directed in 2007 by Abby Epstein which follows quite closely the message of this book and gives more up to date statistics as this book was first published in 2001.

Wolf presents her book in a refreshingly honest & intellectual manner about what it really means to become a mom. Yes you will lose your identity. Yes you will be depressed. Yes your relationship with your mate will change. Despite all of these seemingly negative events, you will also fall in love with this life that you bring into the world and it's okay not to be perfect.

"Powerfully reveals the truth about childbirth in America. Written with grace, humor, and humanity. This book reminds us that pregnancy and childbirth are still swaddled in layers of illusions."

very enlightening, although if you're feeling at all guilty about not doing the 100% natural childbirth thing, then you'll feel even more guilty. Had a very good section on communication with your spouse, though.
