It's a shame I read this right after "Rumor Has It" by the same author. It's basically the same book with the same characters: widow's guilt, cancer, pushover, abrasive self-centered person, there are other similarities. So my advice is to read one or the other but not both back to back.
What a precious book! Millie is one of the best heroines in ages - pretty, good, kind, friendly and a magnet others - a suicidal novelist, a grieving widower. All of the lead characters are lovely, the plot is fun and funny. I can't believe this one sat for almost a year before I got to it.
Millies Fling by new to me author Jill Mansell delivers a fresh, funny and enjoyable story about a very likeable girl looking for love and finding it in the most unexpected way. This story is set in England, which pleases the anglophile in me. When an author writes a great lead character that the reader can relate to and empathize with, it forms a bond with the story. When an author writes great supporting characters, it enhances the story all the more with flavor and detail and takes the reader on a journey that they dont want to come back from. I felt that way while reading Millies Fling. I didnt want it to end and was cheering for a happy ending for Hester, Orla, Lucas, Con and Millies parents.
The only thing that didnt work for me is the book ended a little too abruptly for me with many loose ends for a lot of the characters. After connecting with so many of them throughout the story, not having the closure on them at the end left me with a feeling of unfinished business.
I will be looking for more of Jill Mansells books to add to my Nook. As a long time fan of the chick-lit genre, I wish I had found her sooner. If you are looking for some light reading that tickles your funny bone while entertaining you, look no further and pick up Millies Fling

Millie Brady saves best-selling romance novelist Orla Hart from jumping to her death one afternoon. Orla is so greatful that she has decided to make Millie the heroine in her next book. She is determined that Millie will find that special someone over the summer and she'll do whatever she can to make it happen. She'll interview and hire just the perfect hunky gardener, she'll have a party in Millie's honor and invite celebrities, and she'll set her up with who she thinks Millie may find acceptable. She won't set her up with Hugh Emerson though. His wife recently died, and a rebound relationship is not what Millie or her book needs.

Being good samaritans, they return it, but not before having a wee bit of fun. Millie calls him up and with a fake accent tells him she is pregnant and he is the father. Hugh is not amused as his wife just died, unbeknown to Millie. She is so ashamed and the guilt eats at her for weeks, until she calls him again to apologize. Hugh is intrigued and asks her to coffee. They see one another again a few times, and eventually have a fling, but Hugh isn't looking for a relationship and Millie's heart is stung.
Millie's Fling takes us on a warm and humourous journey. The main character is Millie, but a side story of her roommate Hester is an added bonus, and Jill Mansell blends them perfectly into one seamless British Chick-Lit. Just reading it makes you feel good, even when things aren't going so well for Millie. An absolute delight!

Thank you Barnes & Noble Free Fridays for providing me with such a fun read. Millie's Fling by Jill Mansell is a delightfully funny romance, nothing too risque and having a lot of heart. Millie finds herself in a bit of a bind--she's without a boyfriend and without a job, making for the perfect situation to be rescued by Orla Hart, romance writer. Orla is reeling from a scathing review of her last book and is determined to write something better. She decides to base her next book on real life, Millie's real life. However, as Millie's life isn't as exciting as Orla would like, Orla decides to bring in some romantic candidates. What she doesn't know, is that Millie is holding out on her.
As I said, this is a fun read. The characters are realistic and funny. Millie is surrounded by a wonderful supporting cast: Hester, her best friend whose boyfriend is working 500 miles away, Millie's father and his wonderful partner Judy, the polar opposite of Millie's mother, Adele who left for London, looking for a more exciting life, Nat, Hester's perfect and absent boyfriend; Lucas, Hester's lifelong crush who is more than meets the eye; the gorgeous Con Devereaux, incredibly famous movie star with his own secrets. And Hugh.
I've never read Jill Mansell before, and this book reminded me very much of a Sophie Kinsella/Marian Keyes type story. Mind you, Mansell definitely has her own style and it's a very nice one, but I was reminded of these other authors, whom I love. In fact, I'm planning to add plenty of Jill Mansell to my download list. I was thrilled when I checked her website to see that she has quite an impressive list of books and awards to her credit. I've been off of "chick lit" for a while, but I think Millie's Fling might just bring me back for a while.

Jill Mansell's writing is delightfully British, quirky, and laugh-out-loud funny. Her characters all have a part in the plot and watching all the threads intertwine and come together in the end is the best part of her stories.
Each time I sit down with a Jill Mansell book, I tell myself I am going to read it slowly and savor it, and then am shocked to get to the end and realize it is 3 o'clock in the morning! I have read four of her books so far and am salivating for more. In fact, none of her books so far will ever make it onto my swap list because I can't bear to part with them!

I really enjoy the books by Jill Mansell. The characters are fun and the stories good and I especially like the settings in England and use of English terns. Makes me feel at home.
Love Love Love this book. Great British Chick Lit! Very entertaining and didn't want to put it down.
