This is a very good mystery that meanders rather than thrills. But the books twists and turns as well as its surprising ending more than make up for what it lacks in suspense. The suspense is the search for the killer of 4 people who own a bee farm. California's LAPD detective Peter Decker is in charge of that investigation and it is his legwork and perception that manages to solve this crime. It starts in the middle of the night as Decker is driving around. He finds a little girl, Katie, about 2 years old wandering around. Her coat is covered with blood but it isn't her blood. A cheerful, playful child, Decker is charmed by Katie and becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to her. Little does he know that he ends up finding much more than Katie's innocence would ever imagine. In the meantime, Decker is helping a Vietnam Vet friend, Abel, fight a rape and assault charge; a friend who he's not sure whether or not he's guilty or innocent. At the same time, Decker's fiance, Rina, is in New York on family business. She's the light of his life and we're told how beautiful she is maybe 20 times throughout the book. When Rina returns to Decker in California, he has even more troubles. Abel takes a liking to Rina and one of Rina's family members has attempted to molest her. No wonder Decker keeps getting headaches. Other problems follow as Decker tries to solve them without losing his infamous temper which he manages about half the time. If you're looking for a mystery/detective novel where the suspense lies within the characters rather than through just action, this may be the book for you.
LAPD detective Pete Decker discovers a two year old child wandering in a neighborhood. No one knows the child. He works to find the childs family and finds a chilling murder scent. I thoroughly enjoyed this book - I like Faye Kellerman's work.

One of the early Decker-Lazarus books. If you haven't read it, time to do so.
Good story as all hers are
This is one of her books about Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus. This was my first novel that I read that was written by Faye Kellerman. It held my attention and I will read more of her books.
This is the third book in the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series. In this book Peter is alone, while Rina is away in New York contemplating his marriage proposal, when on his morning drive to work he finds a two year old covered in blood and bee stings. When no one claims her he is drawn into the case which includes a quadruple murder.
This is by far the best book of the series yet. This is a tight and concise mystery, the writing is top notch. You can hear the bees buzzing. Definitely a must read.

This is the third in the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series. The intertwining plots were complex and well done. However, the tutorial on Judaism did not fit quite as well in this book as in the first of the series.

I think Faye Kellerman is my new favorite writer. This is an above-average mystery; especially appealing to those acquainted with orthodox Judaism or bees. A word of warning: the suspects in this book are racists and talk like racists, so if exposure to that kind of thing really bothers you, you might want to pass this book by.

Interesting story, great characters, a bit of mystery. The story dragged a bit for me in some parts, but overall another great story from Faye Kellerman.

It is a sobering discovery, and a perllexing one, for nobody in the development where she was found steps forward to clam the little girl. It is a sticky mass of hatred, passion and murder--in a world where intense sweetness is accompanied by a deadly sting.
In this third book of the series, Detective Decker's character is further developed and we learn more about his past. I'm not usually a reader of detective stories, but between the romance between Decker & Rina and the elements of orthodox Judaism, this series has won me over. Much of the action in this story was set on bee farms which I found to be original on the part of the author.
As a Decker/Lazarus mystery, it's not bad. But the plot largely surrounds bees, and the author clearly didn't do much of anything in the way of research. As a beekeeper, I found myself rolling around in hysterical laughter at, say, her description of the beekeeper herding all the individual bees back to their little hives, like they were itty bitty cattle or something. It was simply too distracting (if lots of unintentional fun.)

As usual several plot lines running at once both personal and professional with the lines blurring a bit in this one.

This the third book in the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series. She is a devout Jew, he is a policeman who decided to go back to his Jewish roots when they met & fell in love. In this book, she has moved to NYC. He finds a toddler wandering the streets with blood on her PJ's & he's trying to find out who her parents are. I really enjoyed the book.
I like this series very much.
I like this Peter Decker series but this one was just not as exciting as most of them have been (some were read out of order). They find a little girl but have trouble finding the parents. When they do, it's a mess of murders and lots of people to blame.
In the middle of all this, an old Army friend of Pete's shows up, in trouble, and asking for help. You know right away he's a real loser, but in what way you really don't know and you could be wrong.
Secrets come out from Peter, from his friend, and from Rina. Some get taken care of and some can't be taken care of.

Great series...make sure you read it in order... better that way... first one is Ritual Bath
