If you haven't discovered Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins series, you are missing a treat. Merrily is a single mom and a vicar in a small village in England, that isn't what is seems. In this book, the Church of England wants Merrily to become a part of the "Deliverance" staff, another word for exorcism. Not helping things is Merrily's 16 year old daughter who doesn't attend church and is "seeking her own way." Good descriptions of the country side and people. This is part of a series but each book stands alone.

This book has just the right mix of mystery and fright. I didn't like the first Merrily Watkins mystery, The Wine of Angels, very much, but I'm glad I tried a second one. I'm just sorry I can't get hold of the rest of the series--so far only one more, The Cure of Souls, has become available. It, too, was a great read.

This is the first Phil Rickman book I've read, and I'm addicted.
The pace is great, the characters are rich, and it's a bit scary without making it impossible to sleep.
