I really enjoyed this historical novel, set in 16th century Venice and Malta. The plot revolves around Jewish midwife Hannah, who is renowned for her skill in difficult births, and her husband Isaac, who has been sold into slavery on the island of Malta. The plot is fast-paced, suspenseful, and full of details of life in Venice.

Great debut novel, looking forward to reading more by this author.

The Midwife of Venice brings sixteenth century Venice to life with Hannah, a midwife whom's husband has been captured at sea and is currently enslaved. Jewish, Hannah knows it is against the law to give medical aid to a Christian, but when a count offers her a large sum to help his suffering wife, Hannah is torn. The money would be enough for her to buy her husband, Isaacs, release, but if she is caught, it could mean death.

With complex and distinct characters, a vividly painted background and a moving and thought-provoking plot, The Midwife of Venice is a must-read! Engrossing and engaging, Roberta Rich has penned a vibrant and lush historical debut! Don't miss this one!!
