Caralee McConnell's past is a secret and her future depends on the whim of her uncle, Fletcher Austin. In order to repay her uncle for his generosity, Carly is at first willing to become the obedient lady he wants her to be and to charm the local American gentry with her finishing-school manners. But the task soon becomes impossible when Carly's disobedient heart is determined to love her uncle's Spanish neighbor, the one man her uncle insists she discourage. Ramon de la Guerra's past has been stolen and his future remains in the hands of Fletcher Austin. Convinced he is trying to fight the injustice of losing his ancestral home and land to Fletcher's greed, Ramon, along with his brother and a band of loyal men, strike at the Americans by making midnight raids as 'El Dragon'. One night, while Ramon and his men are raiding her uncle's ranch, Carly rings the ranch's bell to alert her uncle and his men, but the events that follow are more tragic than she intended and far more terrifying than she ever imagined. Furious at Carly's fatal intervention, Ramon kidnaps her immediately and vows she will pay for the pain she has caused. What Ramon doesn't bargain for is that the sophisticated American is capable of withstanding whatever punishing indignities he heaps upon her. Finally unable to justify his actions any longer, Ramon releases Carly when she promises she will not disclose the location of the stronghold. Carly continues to remain silent, but when her uncle tries to force her to marry a man she does not want, she uses that silence to force Ramon to marry her and save her from disgrace and her uncle's selfish machinations. With Midnight Rider, Kat Martin tells the story of a heroine caught up in a battle between the uncle who is determined to keep the land he took, and the man she loves, who will not relent until he regains the heritage that was lost. Both men claim to love her, both men think they know her, but neither man counts on the loyalty that keeps her from making a choice.Kat Martin's characters live and love long after their story is told! Whether traveling from an elegant hacienda to a mountain hideout or gaining insight into their own beliefs and behaviors, Kat Martin takes her characters on a journey of discovery! Midnight Rider has all of the ingredients for a first class romance that the name 'Kat Martin' promises!
