I wouldn't really call this book a retelling...I didn't find enough similarities between this book and Hans Christian Andersons "The Little Mermaid". It was more of a story told with some borrowed elements and ideas. Andersons classic has been told many ways to make it more palatable for modern young audiences. (in the original version, her tounge is cut out, is told to murder the prince who is marrying someone he loves, and throws herself into the ocean instantly becoming foam and earning a soul...but for all intents and purposes dead) This book is not quite so graphic, nor is it as fluffy as the Disney version.

I love reading books that retell fairy tales. This one was about the Little Mermaid and didn't disappoint. I found that it was a beautiful story written about a young girl named Pearl and why she doesn't feel she fits in with the others in town.
