In the Middle is a story about Nancie Atwell and her eighth grade students in Boothbay Harbor, Maine- about what she and they have learned together as collaborating writing and readers, and about what goes on in one classroom where instruction has been transformed by a teacher concerned enough to question her own assumptions about teaching. It is also a book about adolescents themselves- how they learn, what they beieve and value, and what we can learn from and about them.

The first edition of Nancie Atwell's ground breaking book. Great buy for teachers of reading or writing... or for anyone who would like to learn more about the process.
