This book is a non-fictional story but rather the educational and a true account of refugees who came to live in the United States. Mary Pipher, the author, is a "culture broker" and she tells us how these families transition from their former lives to a new life here and what she does to assist them by helping them learn English, get drivers licence, living spaces, and learn their new roles in our society. I really have a different view and a much more educated view of our new citizens. So many things that they would not know about the way we live had never occured to me. One example of this, I remember is that sometimes refugees to the U.S. may get, for example, a publishers clearinghouse prize winning notice in the mail & they don't realize that this does not mean they won anything! Lots of stuff we just take for granted. So, I found the book interesting and read through it very easily.

Mary Pipher writes "One of our greatest needs as a nation, is to understand how other people see us."
