Men with a Mission, 1837-1841: The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the British Isles
Men with a Mission 18371841 The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the British Isles Author:James B. Allen, Ronald K. Esplin, David J. Whittaker In 1838, suffering from persecution, uncertainty about the future of the Church, and poverty, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must have received this revelation with astonishment: "And next spring let them depart to go over the great waters, and there promulgate my gospel... more »."
Their adventures in the British Isles as they responded to that call are an epic story in the history of Latter-day Saint missionary work -- poignant, powerful, and inspiring.
Through the efforts of these young Church leaders (their average age was only thirty-one), thousands of converts were won. Many of those believers would emigrate, strengthen the Church, and join the westward migration to the Rocky Mountains.
The places where Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, George A. Smith, Wilford Woodruff, John Taylor, and Willard Richards served are legendary: The River Ribble, John Benbow's picturesque farm and pond, the hills of Herefordshire, and the docks of Liverpool. These are the settings in which they preached, published, confronted devils and persecutors, suffered homesickness and deprivation, and won the hearts and loyalty of those who became British Saints.
Their work completed, they returned home to rejoin their families and to lead the Saints to the Great Basin. Theirs was a glorious mission, and their story is told in fascinating detail in this spirited and readable book.« less
