Contentious college student Sarah Markham has hired Sunny to delve into her family background, a task that proves daunting for the feisty detective, who soon finds that facts about Sarah's parents are surprisingly difficult and dangerous to pin down. Meanwhile, Sunny's life is complicated by the fact that she's facing a genuine personal crisis of her own. As her ex-husband -- a man she loved but couldn't live with -- makes plans to remarry, she can no longer deny her disastrously mixed feelings about relationships. But, even as she decides to confront her own chaotic emotions through therapy and personal experimentation, the passionate P.I. puts her life on the line to answer troubled Sarah's questions about where and how family and identity intersectand who is willing to kill to conceal the truth. I love Parker. He creates strong, ethical yet human characters, excellent dialogue, strong sense of place, and very good mysteries. Sunny is tough, but loves her dad and her dog, knows when she needs backup and is true to those around her. This is a great series.
I was surprised to find i liked this book. i had never read this author before and i decided to give it a go cuz u never really know and this book was really good. I always like a strong female lead. the kind who could take care of herself in a kickbut way

An interesting read, however I hadn't read any other books in her series, so there were a few times that background info would have helped. However, the story line was outstanding and flowed incredibly well. Worth the read - the twist will shock you I swear!
This is the first book in the "Sunny Randall" series. It's a great detective novel featuring a feisty, female detective with serious personal issues. The plot is clever, and the writing is extremely witty. The story moves quickly, and the book is difficult to put down once you start reading it. Quite enjoyable. theres only one way for boston pi sunny randall-as conflicted as she is beautiful-to get her mind off her personal problems, and thats by helping someone else get over theirs.but as she assists a troubled young woman in locating her birth parents, sunny uncovers some dark truths about her own past
P.I. Sunny Randall is as entertaining as ever.
boston PI Sunny Randall helps a young woman locate her birth parents.
He writes the best stuff. This has a chick detective in it, who has the shrink from Parkers usual books. Okay it was fun reading
Sunny is not as sharp as Spenser, but close enough. And Paker always comes through with a great story.
Like Spencer, but with ti.... um, estrogen.
Boston P.I. Sunny Randall-as conflicted as she is beautiful-helps a troubled young woman locate her birth parents only to uncover some dark truths of her own.
My ex-husband was getting married to a woman I wanted to kill. I didn't actually know her, and killing her would only make matters worse. But I got as much pleasure out of the idea as I could before I had to let go of it.
And so begins Melancholy Baby, the fourth novel in the bestselling series featuring Sunny Randall who now faces the unthinkable: the marriage of her ex-husband, Richie, to someone else. Despite the formality of divorce, Sunny and Richie's relationship had continued, in its own headstrong way, until Richie's desire for marriage overtook Sunny's need for freedom. So when college student Sarah Markham comes asking for help in finding her birth parents, Sunny realizes she must take the case, if only to distract her from her personal life.
But life and work have a curious-and dangerous-way of intersecting. Before the investigation has a chance to take off, two key players are dead, and Sunny is back on a psychiatrist's couch, probing her own past for clues. What she discovers has the potential to shatter Sarah Markham's family and destroy her sense of self, while Sunny's own beliefs are put to the ultimate test.
Emotionally complex and rich with insight, this is the Grand Master at his storytelling best.

The 4th Sunny Randall - probably my favorite! These just keep on getting better & better ...
This is the first of the Sunny Randall series and Parker makes the transition from macho male P. I. (Spenser) to female detective with surprising ease and insight. Still has the snappy, wisecrack-filled dialogue luckily and is just as much fun.
Sunny Randall makes all of us smile when we read about her exploits and also her neighbor's involvement.
A girl feels she is not her parents child and hires Sunny Randall to find her true parentage. Sunny is having her own emotional crisis and goes to see Susan Silverman. Good story
The first of Robert Parker's new series, reportedly written with Helen Hunt in mind to play Sunny Randall on screen. Althought that fell through, this is a good start on a new protagonist. Sunny and her friends are a welcome addition to the female detective genre.
better than the Spenser novels--a very sympathetic female detective.
An excellent SUnny Randall read...Parker at his funny best!
Here is Robert B Parker writing a mystery with a female P.I. set in Boston. I loved it.

I have read all of Parker's books, and I think that the Sunny Randall ones, like this one, are as good as any of his books.
