Meeting Mr. Right introduces us to a couple, Ben Atwood and Veronica Vee Bishop, who are both firefighters and Internet classmates/pen pals (unbeknownst to each other). Their Internet personas are so different, they may as well be split personalities. Usually, I like these type of inspired romances, but I found this one to be sexist and silly.

For one thing, Vee seems to have no clue how to handle herself in real life. Shes mourning the death of her mother, which would be a psychological blow to anyone, male or female, yet she repeatedly hides behind her one of the guys personality at work, lest anyone think she cant be a firefighter. In one scene, she dresses up to attend a banquet thats a charity benefit and is startled to see how people treat her differently once shes in a dress with her hair and makeup done. Really, Vee? You really dont know that men like to look at attractive women? How stupid are you, anyway? And who on earth dresses up to serve food to the homelesshas anyone else seen waitresses with three-inch heels and dresses on?

Vee and Ben banter and bicker occasionally and while Ben begins developing feelings for Vee, she hesitates because she believes that Ben broke her friend Olivias heart. Ben, meanwhile is shy and nervous around women in general because he was the proverbial ugly duckling turned beautiful (or handsome) swan. As nervous as Ben is in real life, though, as BJ online, hes controlled, comfortable, and encouraging to Vee. The opposite is true of Vee: shes abrasive to Ben in real life, but online shes comfortable telling him a lot about her own life and fears.

Theres another thing. Later in the novel, Vee humiliates Ben at a dunk tank in front of the whole town after someone suggests that her prize for dunking Ben be a date; Vee callously dismisses the idea. Bear in mind that this is after Olivia has explained to Vee that Ben really didnt break her heart and that shes okay with seeing him and talking to him. I cheered when Ben asks her afterwards, What is your problem, anyway? I was asking myself the same thing. Vee hasnt forgiven Ben but he hasnt directly done anything for which he needs her forgiveness. And even though Vee knows she owes him an apology, she refuses to give him one, instead asking, You really dont know, do you? Honey, he isnt a mind reader. Now stop being such an alpha bitch and do the Christian thing and apologize.
