I enjoyed this early Dirk Pitt adventure. Even though it was the first Pitt novel published, it was the second written - behind "Pacific Vortex." This one was full of the usual action and adventure from Cussler but the writing style was a little rough back in the early days. Pitt came across as a much harsher character - maybe he mellowed through the years. The story was also shorter than some of the later books and didn't include the usual event from the past that gets tied into the present. The story itself was good, but I didn't quite buy the premise of smuggling using a submarine attached to an ocean freighter. Otherwise, I would give this one a mild recommendation. I need to go back and read some of the other early Pitt novels.

This another of Cussler's books (the second in Dirk's timeline, I believe). As always, it was a pretty quick read and an exciting adventure. This adventure had Dirk paired up with his (seemingly constant) companion, Giordino.

Good fun, as always with the Dirk Pitt stories. Interesting in another way, too: This was one of the earlier (maybe the first?) of the Dirk Pitt novels. Both the story line and the characters are a bit less complex than much later books--which still takes nothing from enjoyment. Also fun to see Dirk and his buddy Al younger. For me, it was a bit of a "prequel," filling out some background and context. Well worth an evening or two.

Good standard Dirk Pitt adventure. Interesting twist on Mediterranen involvement in WWII. About a German commander who emerges years later and is a world-wide smuggler.
