This is a fascinating book written in an engaging format. It is a combination of Early 20th century Honolulu history, actual mysteries, and news articles of the times, and a fictional detective named McDougal. This book gave me a wonderful feel for Hawaii from the 1920s until the 40s. The author weaves actual history with fictional characters and real settings combined with actual news photos of the events and setttings in the time period to create plausable explanations and action packed stories. Anyone wanting a short history lesson of Hawaii in the days between the world wars and before statehood and who also enjoys mysteries will enjoy this book.

Glen Grant weaves fact with research and fiction into a terrific series of stories that take the reader to the golden age of Honolulu in the '20s and '30s. A very good read, especially for those who enjoy Hawaiian literature.
