Interesting look at actual multiple murder case in the early 19th century. Author closes with his own take on what happened.
Historic murder mystery. I picked it because of PD James, who was one of authors, but I'm not interested in series of 1811 murders.
Crimes near the London docks provoke nationwide revulsion and panic. These notorious crimes took place around 1811. This true detective story is set in historical context. Great read.
Kirkus Reviews says: "A spellbinding mystery replete with authentic historical minutiae and a brooding, teeming early 19th century locale." Time repots, ' Vivid in atmosphere and detail."' The notorious crime that shocked London, "the Radcliffe Highway Murdrs of 1811, that were later compare to the Jack the Ripper killings: "the very symbol of murderous and unthinking brutality."
I absolutely loved this book. I'm a big fan of historical fiction and mysteries and this is a gem. I learned so much about London in the early 1800s.
True story of un unsolved, 19th century murder in London
The account of multiple murders in 1811 London, and how the killer (?) was caught.
Very interesting read, but ultimately not satisfying, because the true killer(s) are not brought to justice. Instead an innocent man is convicted.
A police force, as we know it today, did not exist then - the "evidence" used against the suspect is very flimsy.
Great read if you are interested in historic cases and procedures.
Not so great if you are used to current mysteries and expect "closure".
