This is an unusual marriage because the couple knows almost nothing about each other. Justin Thornhill, an ex-military man with limited means and many scars, wants a wife and allows his solicitor to advertise for one. The solicitor sends Helena Reynolds on to the second interview with Mr. Boothroyd, another intermediary checking over Miss Reynolds. He's much less satisfied because Helena is beautiful and wears fine clothing. However, Justin likes the lovely woman and wants her. He tells Helena up front that they will live in an isolated house near the coast. Of course, ghosts exist, and people don't want to work there for long. Helena knows all this, and still, she marries Justin.

All Helena asks for is safety and a little kindness. The reader knows that she has some significant bruises that cause her pain. However, Helena does not divulge that information. Not long after the marriage, Helena's world comes crashing down when her uncle's tough guy comes with a magistrate and demands the uncle's niece back. Justin refuses and formulates a plan with his solicitor to thwart the uncle. However, the real story is the beautiful communication between Justin and Helena.

Enjoyable! Mail-order bride meets Beauty and the Beast. A solidly rich tale filled with high emotion, danger, a wounded hero, a desperate heroine in need of rescuing, and a good plan to outwit the bad guys--all the elements needed for a satisfying and romantic read. I want more from Mimi! 4 stars.
