I loved this! Jessica Anya Blau has written the perfect summer novel - add it to your summer TBR list now! I looked forward to each reading opportunity, but didn't want my time with these quirky, dysfunctional, wonderful characters to end.
Mary Jane takes place during the summer of 1975 when 14-year-old Mary Jane nannies for Izzy, the precocious 5-year-old only child of Dr. and Mrs. Cone. To say the Cone household runs differently than Mary Jane's is a a major understatement. She has many coming-of-age experiences with the Cones and their secret summer "guests" that will shape her future.
The novel is filled with 1970s food, fashion, and so much great music, but it's not all fun and fluff. The plot includes addiction, racism, and infidelity. I loved the author's writing style that's easy to read and also very meaningful. There's much for a book club to discuss.
Thank you to Custom House for the ARC via Goodreads; all opinions are my own.
