Many misunderstandings have separated Laura and Ford in the seven years since they last saw one another. Laura had broken her engagement to Ford and married his Uncle Cyrus; Ford raced off to India and became a nabob. Cyrus has now died and Ford is the new Lord Kingsfold; he returns to England bearing a grudge against Laura. For her part Laura is wary of coming under the power of another man, as Cyrus had been a brute and a bully, and both she and Ford are concealing secrets.
