Janice -
An interesting tale of two people who had been friends when younger and now meet again as adults. Additional twist in that the widowed heroine Susanna is dyslexic and has been hiding that fact in fear her entire life. In her era people in general did not recognize dyslexia as a mental/physical quirk; they would have thought her just stupid, and only if she were lucky would people have treated her as having any value as a person. Susanna's story should rouse some sympathy.
