It was surprising news to learn that Lafayette lived in the US for a while (during and after the American Revolution) before returning to France -- in time for the beginning of the French Revolution. I also didn't know that Thomas Jefferson helped Lafayette write "the Rights of Man and of the Citizen," a declaration for French rights (written before the French Revolution started). Thus, Americans were involved in the French Revolution ideas.

I appreciated the clarity of the Hourly History's evaluation of the reasons behind the French Revolution. The whole story of Lafayette's life was engrossing; he was much more important than I remember history texts telling. The fact that he spent his own fortune helping the Americans is amazing. Lafayette must have been shocked and sick at heart with the way the Revolution devolved into an extended bloodbath in his own country. Thanks for the excellent summation.
