Book one of Eugenia Price's Florida trilogy.
From back cover:
"...inspiring story of a unique American heroine--a woman whose strength and resourcefulness overcome every obstacle to survial in an untamed and turbulent land. Maria is a true pioneer, valiant, hard-working, independent. But she is also a vibrant, flesh-and-blood woman, tempestuous in passion, steadfast in love."
A bit too romance novel for my liking but the historical facts and living in the area that it all took place over-shadowed the negative. A story of strength and courage in the early days of of our nation.
These are very simple reading.
I thought perhaps it might be more appropriate for a girl age 14 and above, however, it was entertaining.
