My husband and I reviewed this book together for a church program. I found it disgusting that the authors went through so much trouble to bring up past experiences- in vivid detail. We KNOW they struggled in this area- otherwise there wouldn't be a book. But to bring it back to light? In a soap-opera form, with details down to how a woman's body moves while she's jogging (insert bouncing & sweat remarks here)?
I thought this book was soft-core porn in itself.

My husband (who has struggled with this issue, and by the grace of God- conquered it) found it to have WAY too many details as well, and it brought up things that he has wiped from his mind and didn't need/want to "see" again. He didn't find any help in HOW to rid himself of these images & thoughts...just that "once they're there, they are there to stay". That doesn't offer any hope, does it?

Another man at our church read this book, and he is currently struggling in this area. He said much the same thing. After he read it, he said to us "But HOW do I stop this addiction? This book didn't tell me that, it just said there's no HOPE! It's like a men's locker room conversation!"

Bottom line: If you or someone you know is struggling in this area, this is not the book that is going to give you the tools (and hope) you need to win this battle. Please search out another book (John Eldredge & Gordon Dalbey are excellent authors on men's issues).

It's been a while since I read this and I decided to read it again, this time with my husband. I just wanted to add my review because it wasn't getting the praise it should.

Yes, it's a bit graphic. The world doesn't play around with all the sexual propaganda they throw at us and this book doesn't play around in calling it like it is. If you want PRACTICAL advice on how to train yourself to avoid most temptation, this is a great book. They give real examples of temptation, and how to avoid them. Things like, BOUNCE your eyes. You cannot avoid seeing a woman running down the street in a revealing outfit, but you can train your eyes to "bounce" from that image as soon as possible.

I don't think they discount deliverance and the power of God working in us to help us with these battles, they just cover how a man can avoid falling into most traps to begin with. And yes, it's a two letter ugly word most people like to avoid called "self control."

I highly recommend this book and the one for women, Every Woman's Battle.

Really good read. And it's cleverly written while not taking away from the seriousness of the topic at all. Plus it doesn't compromise the truth of the scripture, which I particularly appreciated; in short, it wasn't 'self-helpish'. I also think the two authors have a great synergy and their styles balance one another. And actually, I got more sound, practical advice from this one than I did from Every Woman's Battle.

Jesus replied, You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
I was disappointed with the emphasis on human strength and will power. It also had the flavor of you dont want to be an embarrassment to God, yourself, and family so stop sinningpick yourself up and get serious about purity. I dont believe there is any power in a system where your goal is to avoid condemnation. Galatians 5:4 says, You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. The bottom line is you can try harder and put in safe guards (which you should to protect yourself), but you will give in to temptation occasionally and sin. You must rely on Gods grace and push into His presence to find victory.
I believe success is found in finding your blessings in Father God. When you become fixed on the Face of God and experience His amazing presence and voice you find success; rather than trying to be justified by avoiding sin which leads to alienation from Christ.
