I don't know why this book didn't seem to get much press, or why I wasn't aware of it before Jay Rayner started appearing as a judge on TopChef, because I found it every bit as entertaining as the better-known "foodie" books by Ruth Reichl, Gael Greene, etc. Mr. Rayner gives us an excellent look into what it's like to eat at the most highly regarded and most expensive restaurants in the world (according to Michelin, anyway), and what you get for the insane money spent.
I love the fine dining experience, but I'm not the kind of person who can get my head around spending $300+ per person for a meal even once much less doing so regularly. This book is a great peek into the lives of people for whom that kind of dining is an everyday thing.
Aside from being a fun read, it also confirms my thinking that a great meal often has nothing to do with price!
