I loved this book chronicling the life of Hannah Gavener starting at age 14. The author manages to provide keen insight into the various stages of a teenager to young woman's life. Character development was fun as well.

i think i'm going to give up on Sittenfeld now. This is the 2nd book now that I have found her main character whiney and not very likable. As with PREP, the main character makes herself unlikeable. She is smart, and could be funny if she wasn't so judgemental about everything. UGH...didn't care for at all!

A good read. I liked this book much better than Prep, because although Hannah has her fair share of angst, she is definitely more likeable and realistic than Lee (main character in Prep). It was nice to see her progression throughout the years, and to see her shed (albeit ever so slowly) some of the self-doubt that was holding her back. I recommend this one.

While Sittenfeld's use of language makes great reading, I found the main character's constant low self-esteem and childish thought processes quite boring and irritating.

This is the story of a young girl trying to fnd Mr. Right. It is funny, poignant, and a darned good read. I like the ending, because I think Hannah is happy at last! Sittenfeld promises to become an important author as she continues on her writing career.

This book was an easy read, although it was hard for me to get into at first. The end of the book did satisfy me - the lessons each woman learns eventually - that we are good enough!

I found this book very depressing. Hannah thinks she has found the man of her dreams but he also happens to be her cousin's boyfriend. Every guy she comes into contact with is compared to Henry. End the end, when they do get a chance to be together, he says that he just wants to be friends and gets another girl pregnant. I just feel that she needed to move on with her life and forget about this guy. I don't think I would recommend this book for others to read.

If you enjoyed Curtis Sittenfeld's debut novel Prep, chances are that you will like her next offering, The Man of My Dreams. Despite the romantic title, like her earlier work it is a poignant coming-of-age story of an anxious girl, but the story is more streamlined. We meet Hannah at age 14 as her parents' marriage is dissolving, and visit her again through various points throughout her college and into her late twenties. With some recurring characters, we see how Hannah negotiates love and life, awkwardly at times, but maturing emotionally and sexually. Sittenfeld is exceptionally gifted at making her protagonist's mental experience come alive; what seems raw and true is carefully but invisibly crafted to create that effect. I loved this story and was pulling for Hannah, despite her faults.
