The mysteries take place during WW1. The author writes so
vividly and factually of this era that one might think she
actually lived through this time herself. Her mysteries
take you back to the 1800's and early 1900's when.
Maisie became a detective back during the "great war" when
women weren't exactly welcomed in such an occupation.
She solves mysteries as well suffers through her own
heartbreaking losses during the time we called, "the war to end all wars"

A very fresh take on the classic English detective, and a nice twist on the young woman detective genre. Set in WWI England,it is another view of life in England in the time of Downton Abbey. Maisie herself is very original and likeable, and the mysteries are original. A fun read and I'm looking forward to the whole series.

I have just finished reading this wonderful book containing the first two books in the Maisie Dobbs series. I am hooked and look forward to reading others in this series.
The writing is easy to follow as it goes back and forth in time and in a very shortly you feel as if you know the characters as well as old friends.
I highly recommed this series, and wonder how long before BBC picks it up for TV.
