Men to marry were scarce in Simpson Creek TX after the Civil War so Milly Matthews and some of her single friends organized the Simpson Creek Society for the Promotion of Marriage. With Milly at the helm, they placed an ad in the Houston Telegraph newspaper for mail order grooms. They intent was for the men to send details about themselves in a letter and the ladies would read them and then decide who to invite to Simpson Creek for more in depth information and to see if the man suited any of the ladies. Think online dating 1865 style.
But Nicholas Brookfield did not follow the rules, he showed up in Simpson Creek without having sent a letter or being invited. Soon after his arrival he volunteers to help Milly and her sister care for their ranch after an attack by the Comanches wounds their foreman. He soon learns that there are older men in the community who want Milly or Sarah to either sell the ranch or marry one of them so they can control the ranch. This bothers Nick
as he struggles to understand his feelings for Milly.
Lots of twists and turns on the way to true love are wonderful told in this story.

I never really felt invested in either character and ended up skimming most of the second half of the book. C-

We've all heard of mail order brides but this book is about mail order grooms. A group of women who want to be married in a town who lost most all of its' eligible men to the Civil War decide to advertise for husbands. In the Brides of Simpson Creek series, Laurie Kingery has introduced a town full of wonderful characters who you will become fond of in the first book, Mail Order Cowboy. I am so looking forward to reading more in the series, especially Millie's sister, Sarah's, story.

This series on Simpson Creek romances are all well done. You do not need to read them in order to follow and enjoy each tale.
