Timothy Garton is a journalist and author with a knack for being in the right place at the right time, including Warsaw, Buda-Pest, Berlin and Prague at key points in 1989, when each stood at the gates of freedom, chaos or renewed repression. He describes the incredible democratic energy, as well as the tenuous fragility, that characterizes the unique revolutions taking place in each country. In the process, he reports history as it was being made. Parallels to our own times are sometimes striking
