I just read Devon Monk's first book and really enjoyed it.
The main character is what is known as a Hound - someone who can trace a spell back to the person who cast it. The book is set in Portland, OR and I think the author does a nice job with her world building. Magic has been commonly used ever since it had been discovered thirty years ago. But there is a physical cost to be paid. Allie, the heroine, suffers from physical injuries and gaps in her memory due to the use of her magic.
One of the ways magic users can avoid paying the price is to offload it onto someone else. Allie's troubles begin when she is hired to find out who offloaded magic onto a friend's child. The trail leads back to her father which is when things get really complicated.
A strong heroine,a mysterious love interest, and a new take on the urban fantasy add up to a solid first novel.
If you enjoy Kim Harrison, Lilith Saintcrow, and Meljean Brooks, I'd recommend this book.

At first I wasn't sure if I liked this book or not, but as I read it I couldn't put it down. In fact I read it in one day. Allie has a lot of issues - her relationship with her father, her use of magic are just some of them. She gets involved with Zayvion Jones & it is complicated - he starts out by tailing her for her father & they end up in a smokin relationship. The characters & story are well written. I like the intrigue & that it will go on in the next book in the series.

This book was a little hard to get into, but is definitely worth the read. There are a lot of twists and turns. I like the way she worked the characters together. Good first book.

This series is awesome! Im on Magic at the Gate and they just keep getting better and better. I am adding these books and author to my list of FAVS because the writing style is on point and the characters are very...original...likable....magical...idk, there are a lot of words to describe them.
If you are on the fence about it, try it out...I doubt you will be disappointed!

This is a new author for me, and I really enjoyed this first book. The take on the Magic is interesting. I loved the characters and there witty sarcasm. Can't wait to get the next book.
