In 1901, young teen-ager Mable accompanies her older sister who is beginning employment as a schoolteachers in Canada, as her pupil and assistant. She also gets involved with a woman who leads a strike of the woman workers at the local cheese-making factory. The book is written as her diary of that time - it also includes a romantic story she is writing and sending by chapters to her friend back home.
