Professor Emeritus Oregon State University Corvallis, Oregon William A. McClenaghan is a Professor Emeritus at Oregon State University, where he taught for 45 years. A student of Frank Magruder's, he began work on the book in the summers of 1946, 1947, and 1948. He assumed authorship in 1949 and updated the text yearly since that time, continuing the tradition of excellence and dedication to civic education begun by Frank Magruder almost 100 years ago. Jane Wilcox Smith received her Master of Arts in teaching as a reading specialist from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She taught basic reading skills at the Schenck School in Atlanta, and remedial English and reading skills at Forsyth Central High School in Cumming, Georgia. She serves on Emory Universityâ€™s Woodruff Libraryâ€™s Special Collection Board.

Carol Sullivan received her Bachelor of Science degree from Jersey State College of New Jersey. She taught at Forsyth Central High School in Cumming, Georgia, in the content areas of English, social Studies, vocational skills, and science. She also taught special education at Sandburg Middle School in Elmhurst, Illinois.
