This is an interesting study of the cultural & political atmosphere of the periods prior to the crime, as well as its aftermath rather than focusing on the crime itself. Unlike many authors that write of this unfortunate & shameful period of American history, Madison does not seem as preoccupied with listing the colour of everyone involved in able to appear unbiased.
He is able to state the facts, period.
The many notes peppered throughout the text cause on to refer to the back of the book are the only distractions from the facts & cause it to be a more difficult read than if the notes had been combined with the bibliography.
